-
You may have been wondering about how to start woodworking, but it seems too hard to figure out where to learn and what to buy.
-
Woodworking seems like a great hobby, but you don’t feel like you can afford all those tools.
-
Most woodworking shows and classes are for people that have some experience. They are not for real beginners.
-
Good furniture is expensive to buy.
-
If you are setting up a new home or living space, then the expenses of buying beds, tables and shelves can really add up!
-
How can you get started in woodworking and save money now?
The answer is in a new, affordable woodworking system.
This course is for:
-
Beginners who are interested to make lots of affordable furniture.
-
Anyone who wants to learn woodworking as a hobby.
-
Students and graduates moving in or out of a new living space, who need a whole new set of furniture.
-
People who have been down-sized, and need to live in a much smaller space, or even a car. They can set up a bed and a table for their basic needs.
-
Anyone with a low-income, who would like to learn a valuable skill making really nice furniture that will last for years.
Get started now, so that you can save for a lifetime on custom, long-lasting furniture, by making your own!
Most woodworking workshops are full of big tools to make wood flat, straight and the same thickness. By using plywood, which is already smooth, flat and uniformly thick, we can skip most of those tools, and get straight to cutting out furniture pieces. With a little smoothing of the edges, we can assemble the plywood parts and make strong, long-lasting and affordable furniture.
To get started in woodworking, you'll need six things:
-
A little Space:
-
About 10 x 10 feet (3 x 3 meters), such as half a parking space, a large washing area, or a big closet.
-
Space in a small room or garage is even better, because then you can leave your work table, tools and plywood set up for convenient use anytime.
-
If your work space has a smooth floor for easy sweeping up of sawdust, then that is best.
-
-
Affordable Tools:
-
A jigsaw to cut plywood into smaller pieces.
-
A hand-held drill to make holes in the plywood.
-
A few small tools to smooth edges and clamp pieces of plywood.
-
-
Plywood:
-
The most affordable 1/2 inch (12 mm) thick plywood is fine for most beginner furniture projects. If it has some gaps and marks, we can pretty it up as we go!
-
Get the 4 feet by 8 feet plywood cut into half or quarters at the store, if it's easier to carry and get home.
-
-
A Work Table:
-
A sturdy, small coffee table is fine. If you can find something free or very inexpensive, put that in your work space.
-
It's good for the work table to have a protruding edge that is easy to clamp plywood to.
-
Otherwise, if you don't have a table, let's make a workbench right on the floor!
-
-
Drilling Jigs:
-
As you learn to make simple plywood parts, we'll make a few jigs that will make cutting and joining the plywood parts simpler and quicker.
-
-
An Ability to Read Drawings:
-
Drawings show the measurements of how big your furniture parts will be.
-
Drawings also show how all the parts join together to make your furniture.
-
Learning how to read a drawing is a skill that you can learn.
-
Drawings are instructions, like recipes, that tell you how much of everything you need!
-
You will also learn how to take the measurements from the drawings, and transfer them onto your plywood.
-
Those markings show you where to drill, and where to cut.
-
Once you learn these simple skills, you will be able to follow any drawing, and understand how to make different pieces of furniture!
